# Day of the Dead 💀

The parade starts at 14:00. Two kilometres from the hotel to the start. I set off on time, with military precision… which turned out to be a waste of perfectly good punctuality.

The tail end of the parade appeared right under my window. So I watched the whole show backwards — like a trailer for a film whose ending you already know but still fancy seeing.

Apart from some lively drummers warming up, the rest looked like a Sunday catwalk after a round of spicy tequila.

Naturally, nobody started at 14:00. Mexico lives in the "mañana+" time zone: "in half an hour… or whenever, really". Much like a rail replacement bus service, only with better costumes.

I walked along the route looking for a spot for a time-lapse. Did the full five kilometres to the finish. Somewhere around kilometre three I found myself pondering the moral fibre of the drummers.

People were standing three deep, as if they were handing out free margaritas. In fact the sponsor was PepsiCo — free Mirinda, still without the new ["we've gone smoothie"](https://www.pepsico.com/newsroom/stories/2025/pepsico-introduces-a-bold-new-corporate-brand-identity) logo.

The atmosphere: hot, loud, with elements of carnival chaos.

I walked back, against the flow of the parade. Caught the drummers halfway. Good thing somebody thought to bring a chap with a tambourine.

Of the whole procession, only one Catrina was prêt-à-porter standard (pictured). The rest was heartfelt Mexican DIY: "make it yourself, but with glitter". Very Blue Peter.

Thanks are due to James Bond. Without his scene in Spectre, Mexico might never have learned that the Day of the Dead can be celebrated in a dinner jacket.

It was more exciting in the film.
