Airlines still practise a peculiar kind of arithmetic: one costs more than two.
Example: one passenger — $214; two — just $126 each.
The algorithms appear to have decided that being alone is a luxury.
In May 2024, CNN Travel and other outlets really did report that airlines (including United and American Airlines) sometimes show lower fares when you search for two passengers at once.

The phenomenon goes by “single traveler surcharge” or “pricing glitch”.
It’s an unofficial term, and the airlines don’t admit to doing it on purpose. They usually blame dynamic pricing algorithms that can accidentally bump up the fare for a single passenger (for instance, if only one seat is left in a cheaper fare class, the system picks the next one up).
The UA and AA example is realistic.
Similar discrepancies have genuinely been spotted by users on Reddit, FlyerTalk and TikTok, with price differences of 20–50%.
