The Village of Nanchong 🎤

Last year the New Year spawning took place in the quiet little village of Nantong.

This year the current carried me to the quiet little village of Nanchong.

Same Nan (it means “south”), different endings.

Population: 1,936,534.

The 5,607,565 on Wikipedia is the whole prefecture, tributaries, backwaters and all.

Net result: a solid 128th place among China’s settlements by headcount of staff.

The town wins you over straight away, and without pushiness:

• they sing as if they rehearsed before their shift;
• they work as if nobody’s watching;
• they unwind without fuss, on schedule;
• they dance — free of charge for locals;
• they don’t shout about the architecture, they simply show it

But alas, that’s not what we came for 🏨
