Before a well-earned holiday at the Phuket health resort for programmers and OnlyFans entrepreneurs, I stopped off in Singapore to sort things out with Hyatt.

To close out 150 nights and tick off yet another Hyatt Brand Explorer icon.

Hyatt launched the UrCove brand in 2019 as a joint venture with China’s BTG Homeinns group.

The hotels are in China only.

At one point they were the cheapest in the whole chain.

In 2024 there was a scandal when it emerged that one of the brand’s hotels had been inflating accounts on an industrial scale.

July hotel prices in Japan sprang an unwelcome surprise.

We start in Kyoto.

In high season, Kyoto gives not only Tokyo but Geneva and London a run for their money.

I flew into Osaka from Seoul in the morning and headed straight for Kyoto.

You have to split them with a one-day gap.

That little trick is where Marriott does most of its business.

If Hyatt ever fixes this, the Marriott chain can be closed down as surplus to requirements.

Not new, but perfectly fresh.

The video shows a studio for $40 including taxes. No upgrade. But since I still have 3 more stays to go, I didn’t make a scene.

A famous hotel. Cult, even. On paper it sits in the Grand Hyatt portfolio, but it markets itself under its own name.

At check-in, a trainee under the watchful eye of a senior colleague uttered the magic word “upgrade”. He said it with a Shanghai accent, which drained some of the magic out of it. The room turned out to be perfectly ordinary. I didn’t have the fight in me to go back and argue the toss.

I stayed here two years ago. Last time they upgraded me to a room with a balcony, clouds, rain and a view of Walmart. Practically the Lake District.

In the evening the lounge served ceviche — a jolt of the sea and citrus enlightenment on a single plate.

The booze was carried round by two Mexican waiters with faces that said “we’re serving a sentence here, not following a calling”. They looked as if they were pouring the cocktails not for the guests but for themselves, on credit.

They gave me the best of what was left: Regency Club High Floor 1 King Bed — $653.

They’re spread thickly, like Marmite, across ordinary non-chain hotels.

That’s where the multiplier miracles begin — x30, x40, x50 and up.

The best one for my dates, balancing price against sheer juiciness, was x53.

One caveat, to be taken with a pinch of salt: every experiment here is conducted live, with real money and no lab coats.

Rove has rolled out a rate identical to Hyatt’s: $192.16 for 2 nights.

Globalist status didn’t budge the price. The rate matched across every big OTA almost to the penny, give or take a couple of dollars.

Landing a BRP from Hyatt these days is about as likely as a bank paying honest cashback. Or a Southern Rail train arriving on time.
